Shifting Gears and Taking Chances: My Writing Journey
A Guest Post by Mandy M. Roth
I have always loved to read.
I was the kid who walked into the library alone and walked out needing two backpacks to carry everything home. Bless the librarians who quietly removed the checkout limit for me. I stayed up too late reading, getting lost in other worlds and building entire adventures in my head.
Books were an escape, yes, but they were also survival. They carried me through being sick as a child, through awkward and often lonely junior high years, through the growing pains of high school. Books also helped me navigate becoming a young mother and having to work my way through university with a family I hadn’t planned on but am eternally grateful for. Books opened my mind, sent me down research rabbit holes, and taught me that the world was bigger than whatever was directly in front of me.
Writing, though, wasn’t on my radar…
Life, As We Know It
That all changed in my late twenties when real life became stranger than fiction and I was forced to step away from a budding career in the corporate world.
Up until that point, I had always thought my path was marketing, advertising, and art. All the things I’d gone to school for. Never once did writing books cross my mind. Structure, positioning, and brand consistency were second nature to me. When I stepped away from it all, I didn’t immediately think, “I’ll become an author.” I returned to what had always grounded me: reading.
Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance pulled me in with their blend of magic, danger, resilience, and transformation. And somewhere between one book and the next, the shift happened. The stories in my head stopped being passive. They demanded to be written.

Fast & Furious
When I drafted my first novel, it moved fast. What I didn’t consciously plan, but instinctively executed, was bringing my professional skillset into the process. I understood presentation. I understood audience. And I understood story structure and character development without even realizing what they were at the time. A lifetime of being a reader had trained me well. And the marketing side of things helped me understand how to build something sustainable instead of fleeting.
Within a very short period of time from completing my first novel—Daughter of Darkness—I was signing a publishing contract with a small publishing house. From there, I signed with other small presses, which opened the doors to traditional New York houses. I also started doing cover art and marketing for some publishers and other authors. The more I did, the more I realized I was doing the lion’s share of the work, writing the books, doing my covers, doing my own marketing, yet I wasn’t getting the lion’s share of the profit. I started to think outside the box.
Around the same time, the indie author movement started. I was there, helping to lead the way. Ironically enough, it was my indie work that ended up hitting the NY Times and USA TODAY bestseller lists. More than 100 published books later, that blend of art and infrastructure still defines my career.
Life hasn’t slowed down, nor has it gotten any easier. A serious health challenge in our household reinforced just how quickly everything can shift. Writing through that season deepened the themes I’ve always been drawn to: strength, endurance, transformation under pressure. The happily-ever-afters feel earned because I understand the fight a little differently now.
A Helping Hand
Barnes & Noble Press came along shortly after I decided to make a go of things on my own. I was worried about how I’d reach readers without the built-in reach of small press and traditional publishing, not to mention access to major book vendors. I had many a sleepless night over it all. Then, when Barnes & Noble announced their indie arm, I couldn’t get in the door fast enough.
Having my books available directly through Barnes & Noble helps level the playing field. And being on a platform readers trust adds another layer of legitimacy.
One of the most exciting chapters of the journey with Barnes & Noble has been the growth of my Grimm Cove series on the platform. At the end of the third quarter last year, I signed up for as many promotional opportunities as I could with Barnes & Noble. They selected Cloudy with a Chance of Witchcraft, the first book in my Grimm Cove series, for one of their promotions, and it put the series in the hands of readers. From there, it exploded.
Grimm Cove is atmospheric and layered, a coastal town humming with magic, secrets, and complicated loyalties. It’s immersive by design, built for readers who love investing in a series world.
Seeing the series gain momentum with Barnes & Noble readers has been energizing. With the release of Midsummer with a Chance of Night on the horizon, Grimm Cove continues to expand.
Still to Come
At my core, I’m still that kid walking out of the library with two backpacks full of books—still curious, still building worlds, still chasing stories that feel larger than life.
Barnes & Noble has been an important part of connecting those worlds with readers—and I’m very thankful for the opportunity to do so.
