A Checklist for Marketing a Series

Ducklings

Ducks not yet in a row…

So much of a successful publishing experience is about getting (and staying) organized.

And nothing takes more organization than writing a series. No matter the genre, there’s a lot of detail to keep track of from book to book: timelines, family trees, worldbuilding guidelines, and of course, the ever-thickening plot.

Organization also becomes especially important when marketing a series. Over the weekend at Book Expo’s uPublishU program, NOOK Press  joined bestselling authors Barbara Freethy, Bella Andre, and HM Ward on a panel moderated by BookBub’s editorial director Halli Melnitsky to talk about how to market a series. There were lots of great takeaways and inspiring stories.

One thing that was clear is that these many-times-over bestselling authors have got their ducks in a row when they launch a new title in one of their multiple series. To make things even easier, we’ve put together this quick series marketing checklist:

1. Does it look like a series? Keep series branding in mind when creating your next cover. Including the book’s number makes it easy for a browsing customer to see where the book lands in the series.

2. Is the series’ order clear to your reader? Add the series name and book number to the title, too.

3. Did you update all of your product details in NOOK Press to include the new book? This includes:

– Product descriptions for the books in the series

– All of your author bios

4. Did you add promotional content and links to the back matter  of the other books in the series? Use NOOK Press’s editorial tools to easily add sneak peeks, links and other information that will get your reader excited about this latest edition.

5. Did you indicate the book is a series when entering the new book’s details in the platform? This step adds a link to your product detail that connects all of the the other books in your series.
