CROSSING STARS

By Nicole Williams

Star-crossed lovers. Call it my kryptonite, my Achilles Heel, my guilty pleasure. It’s what I love most about reading and writing romance. Basically, I’m a sucker for couples who, in addition to the typical odds, have to defy the not-so-typical ones as well. Most don’t find that happily-ever-after we’re all rooting they’ll find, but some do, and it’s these few in a million that make the tissues and the tears from the unfortunate others worth it. Romeo and Juliet are the iconic star-crossed lovers poster children, but no longer have the market cornered on forbidden love.

Catherine and Heathcliff, Rose and Jack, Allie and Noah, Tony and Maria, Lancelot and Guinevere, Tristan and Isolde, Paris and Helen, Mark Antony and Cleopatra, Anakin and Padme, Gatsby and Daisy . . . the list doesn’t end, which keeps this sucker for tragic love happy (even if it’s only happiness through the sobs and sniffles).

When I sat down to write CROSSING STARS, I knew I wanted to create a star-crossed romance, but not just one where the bad boy falls for the good girl. I wanted the stakes much higher and to create a dark and sinister world that the hero and heroine were tangled up in. From their first meeting, Rylan and Josette realize there’s both a connection and chemistry between them that can’t be ignored, but when she learns Rylan is the only child of the rival mobster in the city, she questions if that connection will only lead to heartbreak and tragedy. Mucking through a gauntlet of obstacles and challenges, the couple finds themselves at an impasse: die together or live alone. Or could there be a third option . . . ?

Will these star-crossed lovers fall victim to fate like so many before them? Or will they defy it?
